AN ORIGINAL SONG BY MARTA STEPANENKO · 2025

WHAT
IS UKRAINE?

Not a flag. Not a headline. Air, morning light, a distant city, a memory that keeps singing. An answer written between two homes.

03 — ABOUT THE SONG

A question people kept asking. A song became the answer.

In new schools and new cities, people would ask Marta where she was from — and what Ukraine is like. The song is her answer: not about war, but about light on morning windows, a grandmother's kitchen, a city that keeps living inside you when you are far away. Written in two languages, because her life now happens in two.

What is Ukraine? It's freedom in motion — a mind that stays open, a heart with no chain.
